Who Needs College Anyway? – IQ and Performance

Who Needs College Anyway? - IQ And Performance

President Obama set an ambitious new goal in his speech to Congress on February 24, 2009, proclaiming that by 2020, America will …have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. But some experts, like author Charles Murray, dont think we need more Americans going to college. In his new book, Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing Americas Schools Back to Reality (Random House, 2008), Murray argues that Americans place too much value on the bachelors degree. Murray and researcher Anthony Carnevale debated Who Needs a College Education Anyway? at the Hechinger Institutes Seminar for Higher Education Reporters in December 2008. Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed moderated the debate. Murray, the WH Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, contends that because ability varies and 50 percent of people are below average, our current system of higher education makes little sense. Carnevale, Research Professor and Director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, argues we should encourage as many students as possible to attend and graduate from college, because intelligence isnt fixed at birth and can be influenced by education. After their remarks, Murray and Carnevale took questions from journalists participating in the Seminar.

@saintgauden It doesn’t mean your more of anything other than an asshole lol…it should be used as a barometer for western society and not as a tool for judging others. Unfortunately people like Charles Murray only care about their ego and fame so they ignore any science that points to the fact that he is wrong about IQ. It’s really heartbreaking because it’s like people are valuing other humans less because of a pointless fucking number…oh well

  2. Chaicoffski says:

Students from the 3rd world often best Americans in Universities, even students from poor, low IQ-having Sudan beast out in these schools and it’s because of hard work. This man is a fool and has put way too much into “natural” ability. I’m telling you right now I’m in college, the best and some of my classes and it’s because I WORK at it not because of natural ability. The hard work has increased my IQ 1 SD+ to about 130-154 depending on my mood when testing…oh well lol

  3. Chaicoffski says:

An IQ does not measure how smart a person is but how well prepared they are for Western Society. Unfortunately Murray got into hot water with “The Bell Curve” but it’s understandable for someone with a degree in Psychology. There is a correlation between IQ and status however and that should never go unnoticed…oh and I’m black btw lol

  4. Elesparto says:

Assigning a number to intelligence falls within the realm of science fiction, sort of like the capacity to beam someone up on a spaceship (Pure Fiction). Surely you smart people must see the fiction in IQ and in many aspects of psychology as well. I think that if you truly analyze and go beyond what the proponents of IQ are saying then you will see it all for what it is and for what it was meant to accomplish. The controlling elites have created these types of frauds throughout the centuries.

  5. sidereally says:

@youngdones IQ is simple: it’s important to have enough of it, but beyond that normal to just above normal is just ‘extra’ and not necessary.

  6. youngdones says:

Could someone with an IQ of 70 earn a PhD in physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, biology, or neuroscience?

    I didn’t think so.

  7. Raybanmonster says:

    @youngdones
Lets test your mothers IQ and treat her according to her score shall we?

  8. youngdones says:

People with IQ’s below 100 should just shoot themselves.

  9. mba2ceo says:

This is all BS … It is all who U know !!!

  10. prschuster says:

IQ is basically a rough measure of your academic aptitude. It’s a good predictor of your potential to do well in school and in most white collar professions. Calling this intelligence is just begging the question.

  11. centurion180ad says:

    All of this is academic.

Unless university trains a person to be //independently// productive, a fledgling graduate is going to be at the mercy of a corporation, which is a pure tyranny.

Stack that up with the wanton criminality of the Debt Syndicate, the TRILLIONS of plundered oil & heroin laundered through the corporations, and university training is useless.

BANKERS want ruthless mass murdering CRIMINALS, to rule the earth. That is EXACTLY what is happening.

  12. saintgauden says:

I think they need different terms than “smart” and “high I.Q.” It’s just another little pointless competition that society puts great weight on…a hundred years later, it will be disproven and there will be another fad. So goes the human race. So guys, use the high I.Q. thing as a parlor trick and get some pussy before the theory is inevitably disproven.

  13. Shrunkenhead61 says:

So, yeah, go to college if you are smart. But being smart doesn’t dictate performance. IQ is loosely there. It’s rally more of being smart. He had a good analogy – Academics is to smart people as Athletics is to physically adept people. (They aren’t mutually exclusive.)

Many people don’t know what they want to do our what is out there, even after college sometimes.

Proverb: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

  14. m015094 says:

I agree,,, the majority of college kids shouldn’t go to school. They are way too stupid.

  15. RSSFeedify says:

@todengine At the end of the day, all races/ethnicites are included in this. Intellectually, yes all. Financially, well, this may vary. But in all, students from many ethnic backgrounds will have difficulties with traditional college work/pressures.

  16. todengine says:

awrezy, Mr. Murray has said nothing about African Americans and the poor. You are the one playing the race card here. We all know that everyone has different intelligence levels, its just been taboo to discuss. Mr. Murray is a breath of fresh air.

  17. awrezy says:

Ask a noble in the 13th century and he would tell you that most peasants are not smart enough to learn to read.

Ask a scientist in the 17th century and he would tell you that most women are not smart enough to do science.

Ask Charles Murray in the 21th century and he tells you that some kids (with a tendency to be African-American and poor) are not smart enough to excel in academics.

There will always be people who ignore or hide the real reasons for inequality to advance political goals.

  18. prayfertrey says:

I would just make it simpler and ask, “what do you want to do?” rather than ask, “how smart do you think you are compared to other people?” The ego doesn’t deal with these things constructively.

  19. ecambodia says:
